Building the Taj Mahal as Darius resulted in a Golden Age of 33 turns (should only be 50% longer). Darius with Chichen Itza resulted in a 49 turn Golden Age.

Depends on what your plan is. Early game, even if you are not going for a culture victory, great works of art are usually better because of the 2 culture per turn (for social policies) and 2 tourism. Late game, when Great Work Slots are almost entirely filled up, that's when you use Golden Ages. You won't be doing that much with 2 culture and 2.

Once that really long golden age finally runs its course, the next one's happiness needed will be based off it being 1 golden age. However, if you have a happiness driven GA & let it expire before Taj Majal is built (or artist popped), the happiness needed for your next golden age will increase twice; it counts as 2 separate golden ages.
